Due to the support by LHS administration and faculty and the energy of LHS students, we are very fortunate at Lakeland High School to be able to offer such a wide variety of extra curricular activities for our students. We have everything from highly competitive athletic sports to clubs that actively are involved in community service events and even clubs that are geared more towards interacting socially with your fellow class mates. If you truly want to enrich your high school experience then you need to get involved. In fact, join as many clubs and sports as your schedule will allow for. Get involved as a class officer, join student council, or simply join a club simply be a member. If you happen to have the right GPA and courses, an invitation to join National Honor Society will be offered beginning in the second semester of the sophomore year. Students who get involved make friends, feel like a part of the school, and have a much more rewarding high school experience. These students also qualify for more scholarship opportunities. To make the most of your high school years, Get Involved!

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is a graduation requirement for all regular diploma students in the State of Florida.
Students take this test throughout their elementary and high school years, but when they reach sophomore status, the test is used as a graduation requirement. Students who need assistance with FCAT skills may ask teachers for extra worksheets, take a class through the Florida Virtual School ( http://www.flvs.net/), or visit sites developed by the State.

Testing for College Bound
Both the SAT and ACT changed in the 2004-2005 school year and we strongly advise that you visit their web sites in order to get the most current information.
The following links will take you out of our web site. Please open a new window from your browser if you would like to return to this site.
We recommend that students who are anticipating attending a college or university begin to take the SAT or ACT in the spring of their junior year. More advanced students may want to take the tests in the winter of their junior year. Most colleges accept either test; however, to be sure that the right test is taken, please visit the web site of the college of your choice.
The PSAT is the test that juniors take in order to qualify to be a National Merit Finalist. The test is only given once a year in October. Juniors must take this test in the fall of their junior year in order to be eligible to compete for the National Merit Scholarship. Sophomores are allowed to take this test as practice for the qualifying test during their junior year.
There is no make up date for the PSAT.
For more information regarding the PSAT, you may click on the following link: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html
The CPT is the College Placement Test given to students who would like to dual-enroll in a community college or enter a community college at the end of their senior year of high school. Polk Community College gives this test on their campuses all year, but students who wish to dual-enroll must see their guidance counselors first to make sure they meet the requirements and if it is advisable to enter the dual-enrollment program. The above link will take you to a CPT study guide.

Each year the counselors go over the requirements for the Bright Futures Scholarship with each student. This is the scholarship that is funded by the Florida Lottery. The information given on this page is current, but we advise that you click on the following link to visit the Florida Bright Futures Home Page and check to see if any changes have been made to the scholarships' criteria. The site will give you current information about Florida Academic Scholar, Florida Medallion Scholar, and Vocational Gold Seal Scholar requirements.
The scholarships are based on a student's academic GPA as computed by the State.
Both the Academic and Medallion scholarships are based on 4 years of English, 4 years of math (algebra 1,2, geometry and above), 3 years of science, 3 years of social studies and a minimum of 2 years of the same foreign language.
The Gold Seal Vocational scholarship is based on the same courses required for graduation but the electives must include 3 credits in the same vocational area. These areas include 3 years of courses in business, culinary arts, child care, engineering, drafting and other vocational areas.
Residency in the State of Florida is mandatory. Students must be American Citizens to qualify for these awards.
The scholarship must be used in the State of Florida. Private colleges and universities accept the monies, but only receive the same amount that would be given to a public college or university.
