What is College Readiness?
Any Junior who took the PERT at LHS (not every Junior was targeted to take the PERT—Mrs. Lane received a list from the district office), received their scores through their p.1 teachers.
Not showing “college ready” indicates the student needs Math for College Readiness &/or English 4 for College Prep. Both of these are solid courses and should be viewed in a positive light. (I think the negativity comes from it being “mandated” by the State.)
Besides the PERT test, a student may show college readiness by scoring at or above “readiness” on the ACT or SAT. Below are the scores (important that they look at their SUBSCORES, not their composite score):
ACT
- Reading 18
- English 17
- Math 19
SAT
- Verbal 440
- Math 440
Book Drive
Teen Trendsetters is having a book drive as a service to the community. If you have any gently-used books you or your younger brothers or sisters have outgrown, we would love to take them off your hands. Please deliver them to room C65 any time before April 12. Again, that’s room C65. Thanks for sharing and contributing to a worthy cause.
Virtual Courses – A New Florida Graduation Requirement
Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 7063, Digital Learning, into law: Beginning with students entering grade 9 in 2011-2012 school year, at least one course must be completed through on line learning. This requirement shall be met through an online course offered by the Florida Virtual School, an online course offered by the high school, or an online dual enrollment course. Students enrolled in the Exceptional Student Education program, may be exempt from this requirement, but it must be noted in the student’s IEP. Please contact Mr. Salimbene at 499-2900 for additional information about ESE students and the online requirement.
What Students are affected by this requirement?
Students who entered the ninth grade in school years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 (current 9th and 10th grade students).
Where can I find more information on this new Florida graduation requirement?
http://www.fldoe.org/eias/dataweb/tech/onlinegrad.pdf
What can I do now to meet this requirement?
- Register for a Florida Virtual School (FLVS) course at www.flvs.org . FLVS operates all year long and FLVS courses are in addition to a student’s full time schedule at LHS.
- Plan to register for a Polk Virtual Course (PVS) in the fall. Please know a PVS course must be part of a student’s regular school day schedule. PVS courses are only available during the regular school calendar and must follow the Polk County Schools Traditional Calendar. PVS does not offer summer school.
- Students are strongly encouraged to consider completing their online course requirement during the summer months through FLVS. Students must have access to a computer and the internet.
What courses may I take that will satisfy the online requirement?
Any high school course offered by FLVS will satisfy this requirement. However, please be aware the legislation specifies a course must be completed; therefore, the student must complete an entire course. If it is a year-long course, then the student must earn both half credits to meet the graduation requirement. A half-credit online course may meet this requirement as long as it is within the 24 credits required for graduation. Students are encouraged to complete a half credit course, not a full credit course option. Confirmation of half and full credit courses may be obtained through the guidance office.
A few FLVS courses to consider this summer:
|
Drivers Education |
Minimum age: is 14; .5 elective credit |
|
Reading for College Success |
.5 elective credit |
|
Personal Fitness |
High school graduation requirement; .5 elective credit |
|
Fitness Lifestyle |
Fulfills the .5 “other PE” graduation requirement |
To take an FLVS course over the summer, request your course now! FLVS is requesting that students “Beat the Rush” and register for their summer courses by April 19th. It is important to note that students will be able to register for summer courses after that date, but they have a better chance of getting their requested course by registering early. Please see the other side for registration information.
