Former Dreadnaught Charity Run/Walk
Dax Gingras, a former graduate of Lakeland High School has recently been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Dax is the PE Coach at North McKeel Elementary and is endearingly referred to as ‘Coach G’. He is only 36 years old with a 2 year old son and a 5 month old baby.
There will be a charity Run/Walk for his benefit. Please do what you can to show your support for a LHS Alumn!

- Returning AP students that have already taken an AP course:
- Current LHS students are to bring their course request sheet and contract to AP Night. These items have been distributed through 1st period teachers. Harrison students will pick up their packet on Monday evening at the LHS cafeteria pavilion.
- Parents and students will “drop-in” between 5:30-7:30 PM to meet teachers, ask questions, look at syllabus, etc.
- Return their signed contracts at the cafeteria pavilion prior to leaving school. They may also return the contract to any AP teacher.

LHS Students Recognized at English Poetry Contest
Last night over 200 poems were submitted for the Polk County Council of Teachers of English Poetry Contest. The top ten poems were chosen for each grade level from a panel of judges throughout the county (Honorable Mention) and Florida Southern College professors choose the top three poems. Our students were in the top three category in grades 12, 11 and 9. All the students below received recognition for their outstanding writing. We are very proud of their achievements!

Yearbook Senior Ad Balance Due May 20th

MCA Students Take 46 Awards on the Year
MCA students just returned from their Florida Scholastic Press Association state competition and they have had an exceptional year! This includes the following publications in which the Journalism, Video, & Web Design students contribute to; Bagpipe, Highlander and S2N.
Of course none of this could have been made possible without the support of LHS’s principal Tracy Collins. These types of events for supporting are not a break for students, but a means to grow and learn from industry professionals, and for those of them who want to study journalism in the future, a means of networking.

In addition, Savanna Collins was the only high school student to participate in the Associate Press Broadcast Workshop with college media on Saturday after the convention ended. She has been asked by the University of Florida multimedia news manager to submit her print articles and packages to him and he asked her to come to UF so he can give her a personal tour of the multimedia facility and introduce her to everyone.

**Please note that Class officers must attend school all seven periods and not be involved with DCT, BCE, OJT or any other program that requires them to leave campus before 2:05pm. You will also be required to attend monthly Student Council meetings, held on the first Monday of each month in room W-104. Failure to attend these meetings and participate in Student Council activities will result in removal from office.
2013 Class Elections Guidelines
No more than:
- 5 posters (each must be hand-made and approved by Ms. Chaves)
- 25 Flyers (originals must be hand-made and approved by Ms.Chaves before they are xeroxed)
- Unlimited pin-ons (originals must be approved by Ms. Chaves before they are Xeroxed; can not be larger than ¼ of an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper.
Speeches:
Speeches are not required but if you wish to tape a speech you must make an appointment with Ms. Hall in the TV production room. They must be in good taste and last no more than 20 seconds.
Other Guidelines:
- All candidates must have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 2.5, good attendance, and a clean discipline record.
- Handouts are forbidden. Flyers must be posted in classrooms oron bulletin boards. They are not to be distributed by hand.
- NO CAMPAIGNING during lunches other than the one you areassigned to (this includes election day).
- Campaign T-shirts are forbidden.
- Candy or other such persuasive handouts may notbe included in your campaign.
- No campaigning over any FM or AM radio or television station during or after school hours.
- No campaigning off campus. ( i.e. around Lake Hollingsworth)
- All aspects of campaign must be in good taste.
- Unless otherwise stated on the Election Application, candidate not acquiring the office of their choice will automatically become a Student Council member.

GRAD BASH: Join your classmates and seniors from around the state as Universal Studios Orlando celebrates a night for seniors only! On Saturday, April 27th, we board busses for a night of bands, dancing, food, rides and fun! Ticket must be purchased from Coach Troller, Mrs. Williamson, or the senior class officers at lunch in the cafeteria during the sale days. The cost per ticket of $95 includes transportation, all-you-can-eat dinner at the pre-party, pre-party music in select clubs and City Walk festivities, special guest in-park entertainment, and admission to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Other food items, beverages, and souvenirs may be purchased (by you) at the park. Permission slip and notarized medical form must be returned to Coach Troller ASAP.
Tempo-Sponsored Graduation Party: Every senior will receive an invitation for you and a guest to attend this fun party at the Lake Mirror Center with food, music, dancing, games, and lots of prizes! This party will take place the night of graduation from 9 pm to 1 am. This is FREE! Senior and guest need picture ID to attend.

Rachel Farley to Perform for Students
Singer/songwriter Rachel Farley will perform for Lakeland music students Monday, April 29. Farley recently released “Ain’t Easy” on country music radio. photo submitted
Up-and-coming country star, Rachel Farley, will perform for music and Multimedia Communications Academy students on Monday, April 29. The 17-year-old singer recently toured on the sold out Jason Aldean/Luke Bryan tour.
This is the first event hosted by MCA. The sitting-room-only performance will be held in the band room.
Senior Ads for May/June Bapipe Magazine
Senior Ads are now available to be printed in the May/June issue of the Bagpipe, on campus during senior finals week.
All ads are 1/4 page
- Cost: $50
- All materials to be printed and payments are due May 8th
- There is a 3 photo maximum on each 1/4 page
2013 Prom King & Queen Information
- Interested seniors will meet in I55 on Tuesday April 23rd at 2:10 pm.
- Rules and procedures will be discussed at the meeting.
- Any violations of the rules will result in your removal from the court.
- Seniors present will be placed on a list for teachers to vote Wednesday April 24th and Thursday April 25th. The list will be emailed to teachers.
- Those students will be reviewed for attendance, discipline, and other issues with administration.
- The top 5 boys and top 5 girls (resulting from teacher votes and administration approval) will be notified on Friday April 26 during5th, 6th, or 7th period.
- Those 10 will have the opportunity to campaign with 6 one-half size posters placed on campus beginning May 2nd and ending May 9th.
- Buttons and stickers are unlimited.
- Posters must be approved by Mrs. Williamson prior to being hung up.
- Posters must be removed by the end of the school day on Friday May 10th.
- Top 5 boys and top 5 girls will be placed on a ballot for voting at prom.
- Voting will take place from 7:30 – 9:30 at prom check in table.
- Announcement made around 10:00 pm and MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN.
What is College Readiness?
Any Junior who took the PERT at LHS (not every Junior was targeted to take the PERT—Mrs. Lane received a list from the district office), received their scores through their p.1 teachers.
Not showing “college ready” indicates the student needs Math for College Readiness &/or English 4 for College Prep. Both of these are solid courses and should be viewed in a positive light. (I think the negativity comes from it being “mandated” by the State.)
Besides the PERT test, a student may show college readiness by scoring at or above “readiness” on the ACT or SAT. Below are the scores (important that they look at their SUBSCORES, not their composite score):

Book Drive
Teen Trendsetters is having a book drive as a service to the community. If you have any gently-used books you or your younger brothers or sisters have outgrown, we would love to take them off your hands. Please deliver them to room C65 any time before April 12.
