English Department Philosophy

The English Department of Lakeland Senior High School, recognizing the central role of language and literature in the growth of the student, both as an individual and as a functioning member of our global society, is committed to enabling the student to master the skills of communication--reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and thinking. The department seeks to equip the student to become an independent and productive citizen, capable of meeting the opportunities of a rapidly changing world. The program promotes humanistic attitudes, aesthetic appreciation, and critical-evaluation skills. It provides the student opportunity for self-exploration. Self-discovery. Self-definition, and self-confirmation. Finally, the English Department is dedicated to developing to the maximum potential of all students, regardless of their differences in abilities, learning styles, interests, needs, cultural values, and/or educational and vocational plans.
