Philosophy: The English Department of Lakeland Senior High School, recognizing the central role of language and literature in the growth of the student, both as an individual and as a functioning member of our global society, is committed to enabling the student to master the skills of communication--reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and thinking. The department seeks to equip the student to become an independent and productive citizen, capable of meeting the opportunities of a rapidly changing world. The program promotes humanistic attitudes, aesthetic appreciation, and critical-evaluation skills. It provides the student opportunity for self-exploration. Self-discovery. Self-definition, and self-confirmation. Finally, the English Department is dedicated to developing to the maximum potential of all students, regardless of their differences in abilities, learning styles, interests, needs, cultural values, and/or educational and vocational plans.
