Philosophy: The Foreign Language Department believes that, in our changing cultural world and global society, we must send forth students who can effectively use the language of other countries, who have an appreciation of foreign cultures, and who have a working knowledge of geography. We believe that modern languages should be taught primarily as tools of communication--reading, writing, speaking, listening--and that classical languages should be taught for the understanding of language concepts and cultural heritage.
