School Intervention Center (SIC)

GOAL:    The goal of the School Intervention Center is to create an isolated, positive, controlled atmosphere conducive to performance reflection, behavior modification and an increased level of academic success.

  • Students are placed in the School Intervention Center (S.I.C.) for a variety of reasons including disruptive behavior, skipping class, abusive language and insubordination according to the penalties assigned under the levels of discipline specified in the School Board's Secondary Code of Student Conduct.
  • Upon entering S.I.C., each student's math and English skills are assessed using the computer software from PLATO.  The results of this assessment are used to help the counselors and administration to make recommendations concerning the student's progress in school.
  • While students are in the S.I.C. program, they work on classroom assignments sent to the center by the teachers.  When they have completed the assignments, or while they are waiting for more work to be sent, they work on the computer in specific math and English skills. They also can work on HSCT remediation, FCAT test skills, and word processing skills.  Microsoft Works is available for students to use while writing papers, as well as computer encyclopedias.

Executive Leadership Program

Southwest Area Teacher Director:  Brescia Kendrick

The Executive Leadership Program represents a unique blending of the business community and the public schools.  The program is designed to provide high ability, motivated seniors with "hands-on" experiences in a chosen profession in order to facilitate a career decision on the student's part.   The student "interns" with a sponsor an average of 15 hours a week.   The intern and sponsor design a program of activities which allow the student to experience a wide variety of tasks associated with the profession being investigated.   The serious educational nature of the program requires that students keep daily analytical logs of their activities, participate in seminars, and prepare presentations demonstrating what they have learned during the program.  Sponsors serve the students as mentors; they monitor their progress, and they provide an environment to assure the students a successful experience.  The internship is not considered employability training, nor is the student paid.

Upon  completion of the program, the student receives 2 elective high school credit and 3 hours elective credits from Polk Community College.
